Why girls should lift weights
There are definitely more girls lifting weights now than there used to be, but a big percentage of woman still question the effectiveness that weight training will have on their bodies and consequently suffer through hours of unnecessary cardio. Ladies, it’s time to embrace girl power! Here is why weight training should be your new best friend.
Firstly, if fat loss is your goal, the effect weight training has on your body is far superior and efficient then spending all your time at the same speed on the treadmill. Cardio is great when not in excess, but it’s good to find time to mix up your workouts and try something new with weights. The word “toned” gets used a lot in this industry, we want to be toned and lean; weight training is how you’ll achieve that. Weight training (also known as resistance or strength training) is also the only way to build muscle, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. Your metabolism speeds up and you become a fat burning machine!
I know that a lot of ladies may not have the knowledge to try weight training, the courage to ask a trainer for advice, or even find some of the equipment at the gym intimidating. Often, instead of taking the risk of injury or facing an insecurity, running or cycling becomes the easier option. But don’t be scared to ask one of the Club team for help, that’s what they’re there for! Just as you would trust a hairdresser to cut your hair, it’s the instructors’ and personal trainers’ jobs to help you with your fitness goals so give it a go! You can book in for a reprogram at reception – which is included in your membership – or a free PT taster session.
Another fantastic way to learn the correct techniques for different exercises and to gain the confidence to start resistance training is to come along to one of the strength classes on our timetable, such as Sculpt, Kettlebells, ViPR or TRX.
Finally, don’t forget about your hormones. Remember the word is toned and not bulky here, women simply do not have the testosterone levels that men do and therefore simply can’t build the same amount of muscle. Very rarely are woman born with the level of testosterone needed to build high muscle mass that women associate with being bulky. So girls, get dead lifting, squatting and hip thrusting for amazing hamstrings and curvy bums, and build a stronger core too. If you eat well and train hard I guarantee the only thing you will be gaining is a gorgeous and strong body, and a whole new outlook on training!
If that’s not enough to convince you, with weight training you’ll sleep better, be more confident, be able to eat more food and have stronger joints. The benefits are endless!
